Large Homes, Wooded Lots, and a High Bar

Solon has some of the largest and best-kept homes anywhere in Cuyahoga County, and the standard here is high. The neighbourhoods off SOM Center, Aurora Road, Liberty and Bainbridge are full of substantial custom houses on wooded lots, and the people who own them notice the difference between a display that was designed and one that was simply installed.

It is the furthest east we regularly travel from Berea, and it is worth the drive.

Why Choose Light The Land for Christmas Light Installation in Solon?

Two things define lighting a Solon house: scale and tree cover.

The scale is real. These are large elevations — multiple intersecting gables, dormers, two-story entries, side-load garages with their own peaks, bay windows with separate roofs, and pitches that run steep. That is a great deal of architecture to work with, and it is also where most displays go wrong. Outline every ridge and valley on a roof like that and it stops reading as a design and starts reading as noise. We map the elevation first and light only the lines that give the house its silhouette from the road.

The tree cover is the other half. Solon lots carry serious mature hardwoods, and a house set back behind them can be almost invisible from the street no matter how well the roofline is run. So on wooded Solon properties we plan the tree work first, not last. Two well-chosen wrapped trunks near the drive, a lit driveway approach, and the shrub beds and walkway carrying the ground level will do more for the view from the road than another hundred feet of eave hidden behind a canopy.

Steep pitches and taller elevations also mean this is emphatically not a job for a homeowner on an extension ladder in November.
